ITINERARY
DAY 1: We'll
leave Cancun and / or the Riviera Maya and travel to Chichen
Itza, ancient city of the Itzae Maya. The ceremonial center of
this site covers an area of more than 3.5 km. As you visit its
impressive pyramids, plazas and temples: El Castillo, the Ball
Court, the Observatory and the Nunnery, to name just a few,
you'll begin to understand the power of Chichen Itza. For
centuries it was a sacred place and it draws pilgrims to this
day.A delicious buffet lunch will be served at the famous
Mayaland Hotel, where you can also take a refreshing dip in
any of the swimming pools, stroll through the tropical gardens
or simply relax in the cool breeze. From Chichen Itza we
travel west to Uxmal, another famous Mayan site, built in the
ornate Puuc architectural style. After check in at Hacienda
Uxmal, just a few minutes walk away from the archaeological
park, a feast for your eyes and ears awaits you at the light
and sound show. The venue is the Nunnery Quadrangle and, as
you sit there under the stars, you'll hear the tale of the
rise and fall of Uxmal while the temples and pyramids of the
ancient city are gradually revealed in all their glory. Enjoy
dinner at the hotel before turning in for the night.
DAY 2: The second adventure-filled day starts
off with a delicious breakfast in the jungle setting of the
hotel. Then it's on to Uxmal for a guided tour. Set among
rolling hills, this site is steeped in mystery. The Governor's
Palace, Pyramid of the Magician and the House of Turtles are
just some of the buildings that will arouse your curiosity.
After the visit to Uxmal, we set off for Merida, stopping at
Yaxcopoil on the way. This was one of the largest henequen
(sisal) haciendas in the area and is now a museum showcasing
sisal manufacture, once the Yucatan's principal industry.Upon
arrival in Merida we'll take you on a City Tour, pointing out
important sites of interest. Founded in 1542 on the site of a
Mayan city called T'ho, Merida is delightful. Its bustling
center boasts colonial churches and mansions as well as Paseo
de Montejo. This tree-lined avenue is famous for its beautiful
French-style residences, built at the turn of the century when
the henequen industry was at its peak. You'll have plenty of
time to explore the city center, browse the shops and craft
markets or sample some Yucatecan cuisine in a restaurant of
your choice. (Due to the diversity of restaurants on offer,
this meal is not included in your package. Your guide will be
more than happy to offer you some suggestions based on your
preferences). Mid-afternoon departure for Cancun/Riviera Maya,
we'll drop you off at your hotel so that you can relax and
enjoy the rest of your vacation.
