Punta
Pelicano Fly Fishing
The Fishing This region of the Caribbean is
outstanding for its diversity of flats game fish. Although
bonefish are the most abundant species, there is also an
impressive population of permit in these waters. The bonefish
average 21 lbs. but range up to 5 lbs. The average permit is 10
lbs, but specimens up to 25 lbs or better can be encountered at
any time. Perhaps the most unique thing about Ascension Bay is
that you have this diversity of species in a flats system the
better part of which provides good, solid wading. This is one of
the few places in the world where you can stalk bonefish and
permit on the same flat while either wading or fishing from a
boat!
Fishermen, go out each morning in one of the lodge's two new
pongas. These boats are adept at crossing expanses of open water
and at maneuvering anglers into and along the flats. They are
specially converted for flats fishing and have powerful 40-horse
outboards to reduce time spent in getting to the fishing. The
local Mayan guides employed by the lodge are capable flats
fishermen well acquainted in fly fishing and spinning techniques.
You will find them to be good, hardworking fishing companions. On
most days you will depart the lodge's dock and head south across
Ascension Bay. The ride to the flats is about 30 minutes. When
you arrive at the flat, you will usually have the choice of
either wading or fishing from the poled boat.
Pelican Point Lodge and the waters of Ascension Bay are located
within the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a United Nations
Wildlife Preserve. Apart from the bountiful game fish, visitors
to the lodge will also marvel at the plethora of bird species
including roseated spoonbills, flamingos, pelicans, heron,
osprey, egrets and many others. Sea turtles and alligators are
also seen from time to time.
