Cancun has many sites ideal for snorkeling. Perhaps
the best is Punta Nizuc. The water is very shallow, and the fish were
plentiful. Other excellent snorkeling spots are Cuevenos, northeast of
Punta Cancun, El Bajito, north of Punta Cancun, and Chitales, northwest of
Punta Cancun.
Cancun and the deep-water channel between the Yucatan Coast and the Island
of Cozumel squeeze the Gulf Stream as it passes by on its journey northward.
This "funnel" effect causes an upwelling and an abundance of fish, from
small to large, in the Cancun-Cozumel area.
